Quelles sources?
Jusqu’aux environs de 1900 : papiers de familles et extraits
Pour dresser une généalogie, on commence toujours par ses données personnelles pour remonter ensuite à celles de ses parents, de ses grands-parents, de ses arrière-grands-parents, de ses trisaïeuls, etc. En raison de la protection de la vie privée, les données de l’État civil et des registres de la population de moins de cent ans ne sont pas publiques. Vous devez pallier cette absence en retraçant ces cent premières années grâce aux papiers et livrets de famille, aux faire-part, aux mémentos, aux épitaphes ou encore aux traditions familiales orales. Vous pouvez également demander des extraits à l’État civil des communes concernées.
De 1795/1805 aux environs de 1900 : État civil et registres de la population
Les registres de l’État civil, tenus à jour par les fonctionnaires de l’État civil des communes, contiennent par ordre chronologique les actes de naissance, de mariage et de décès. Habituellement, ces documents constituent des séries distinctes. Toutefois, dans certains cas, les actes sont enregistrés à la suite les uns des autres, sans distinction. Ces registres sont dressés en double. Un exemplaire demeure dans la commune alors que l’autre est versé au greffe du Tribunal de première instance avant d’être, après un délai de 100 ans, transféré aux Archives de l’État.
Les registres de l’État civil conservés aux Archives de l’État et microfilmés commencent aux environs de 1795/1799 pour les villes, et seulement à partir de 1802 pour la majeure partie des communes campagnardes. L’exemplaire, maintenu au sein des maisons communales, débute généralement quelques années plus tôt que celui versé par le tribunal. Des index alphabétiques des actes de l’État civil sont dressés annuellement avant d’être retravaillés au greffe du tribunal en « tables décennales » (1796-1802, 1803-1812,... 1843-1850, 1851-1860, 1861-1870, etc.). Parfois ces tables ne sont pas strictement alphabétiques, les noms de famille étant encodés chronologiquement sur la seule base de la première lettre du patronyme. Les tables décennales couvrant la période antérieure à 1870 sont majoritairement disponibles sous forme de photocopies; pour la période postérieure (1871-1890/1900) elles sont uniquement consultables sur microfilm. Outre les actes réels, des annexes aux actes de mariages étaient dressées au 19ème siècle et portaient le même numéro d’ordre que l’acte de mariage. Vous y trouverez des extraits d’actes de naissance des époux, des actes de décès de leurs parents ou d’un(e) précédent(e) mari/épouse, des certificats relatifs au service militaire, des actes d’autorisation pour le mariage ou des attestations de contrats de mariages. Nous possédons ces annexes sur microfilms pour la plupart des communes à partie de la Période hollandaise. Pour les villes, elles débutent dès la Période française. La série « publications de bans » peut être utile pour découvrir le lieu de mariage quand celui-ci ne correspond pas au lieu de domicile d’un des futurs époux.
Pour le 19ème siècle, outre les registres de l’État civil, les registres de la population peuvent également être consultés.
À partir de 1846 — et même dès la Période française dans les communes importantes — chaque commune organisait un recensement dont les résultats étaient enregistrés dans des registres de la population et mis à jour pendant les dix années suivantes. Par quartier, par rue et par habitation, étaient consignés tous les membres de la famille ainsi que le personnel qui y habitait avec mention du nom, du lieu et de la date de naissance, de l’état civil et lien de parenté ainsi que la profession. Un registre des noms était joint à ces registres de la population de sorte que vous pouvez facilement retrouver une personne. Bien que tous les registres de la population ne soient pas tenus avec le même soin, ils constituent toutefois une source unique. Nous disposons également, pour la plupart des communes, du recensement de l’an IV (1796). Les l’originaux de ces documents fréquemment consultés et fortement endommagés ne sont plus consultables. Les chercheurs auront recours aux microfilms de ces actes.
Avant ca. 1800 : les registres paroissiaux
Pour la période antérieure à 1796, il convient de consulter les registres paroissiaux ou livres de baptême, de mariage et de funérailles. En règle générale, les baptêmes, les mariages et les funérailles étaient transcrits par le curé dans des registres distincts. La plupart de ces registres débutent entre 1610 et 1630 et s’arrêtent entre 1796 et +/- 1800. N’oubliez pas que ce sont les dates du baptême ou de l’enterrement qui sont renseignées et non celles de la naissance ou du décès. Dans la seconde moitié du 19ème siècle, des instruments de recherche ont été élaborés par commune afin de faciliter l’accès aux registres paroissiaux. Ces index alphabétiques des noms de famille renvoient à une date et une page ou à un numéro d’ordre dans le registre original. Certains donnent plus de renseignements, tels que les noms du père et de la mère présents dans l’acte de naissance. Malheureusement, de nombreux noms demeuraient non identifiés. Aussi, ces dernières années, de nombreux bénévoles ont dressé de nouveaux index alphabétiques plus détaillés, stipulant notamment par ménage, les baptêmes des différents enfants. Vous ne pouvez consulter les originaux tant des registres paroissiaux que des index alphabétiques du 19ème siècle. Outre les microfilms, des photocopies d’un certain nombre de registres paroissiaux et de la plupart des index alphabétiques sont disponibles. Les Archives de l’Etat ont également édité à tirage limité les index alphabétiques des registres paroissiaux de l’ancienne province du Brabant (presque complet) et des provinces de Luxembourg, Namur et Flandre occidentale (en partie). Ces publications peuvent être demandées au responsable de la salle de lecture.
Comment rechercher un acte ?
Les index des registres paroissiaux et des registres d’État civil étant dressés par commune, vous devez connaître la paroisse ou la commune où l’acte a été enregistré. Si vous ne la connaissez pas, pour certains arrondissements vous pouvez vérifier la présence du nom recherché dans le ‘Totaalindex van familienamen voorkomende in klappers van parochieregisters van het Ancien Regime’ (Index général des noms de famille figurant dans les index alphabétiques des registre paroissiaux de l’Ancien Régime) du VVF (Vlaamse Vereniging voor Familiekunde) (rédigé par arrondissement). Si vous ne retrouvez pas directement un nom, vous devez tenir compte du fait que l’orthographe des noms de famille n’était pas arrêté avant l’introduction de l’État civil et que l’écriture du nom était souvent purement phonétique. Dans les actes de baptême, il n’était pas étonnant de voir le nom de famille de huit enfants d’un même ménage écrit de six manières différentes. Si vous ne retrouvez pas un nom dans une commune déterminée, rappelez-vous que depuis 1796, de nombreuses communes ont été fusionnées ou scindées et que les limites des communes ont été modifiées. Dans l’index alphabétique ou la table décennale de la paroisse ou commune concernée, vous recherchez la date et/ou le numéro d’ordre de l’acte pour rechercher ensuite l’acte dans le registre indiqué. Avec les dates et les noms trouvés, vous retournez aux index alphabétiques et aux tables décennales et ainsi de suite jusqu’au moment où vous arrivez à votre plus ancien ancêtre. Certains actes comprennent plus d’information que strictement nécessaire pour votre série généalogique. Notez la provenance de chaque acte: numéro de film, année de l’acte et numéro d’acte. Inscrivez aussitôt aussi la profession, l’âge, le lieu d’origine, les noms des parrains et marraines ou des témoins.
De l’arbre généalogique à l’histoire de famille
L’établissement d’un tableau d’ascendance constitue le début de la recherche généalogique et les noms et dates trouvés ne constituent qu’un canevas. Il est effectivement possible d’établir une biographie sommaire des nombreuses personnes rencontrées dans votre tableau d’ascendance. Vous devrez consulter pour cela d’autres sources également microfilmées et disponibles, le plus souvent, en libre accès. Cependant, vous serez également amenés à consulter certains documents originaux. Il vous faudra alors consulter les inventaires disponibles en salle de lecture. Les séries de minutiers des échevins et des notaires constituent des sources particulièrement intéressantes dans le cadre de vos recherches puisqu’ils renferment de nombreuses conventions passées entre particuliers telles qu’affermages et louages, ventes, prêts et cautionnements, contrats de mariage, etc. Ces minutiers ont été le plus souvent microfilmés. Font également parties des sources généalogiques secondaires les plus intéressantes pour le 17ème et le 18ème siècle, les inventaires après décès (état des biens) et les comptes d’orphelin mais aussi les différents recensements (1693, 1709, 1747, 1755 et 1796), les rôles d’impôt, les livres de dénombrements et les censiers (dans les anciennes archives communales), les lettres de cautionnement, tous les comptes des églises, des tables des pauvres et des communes (archives ecclésiastiques et anciennes archives communales) et encore les procès passés devant l’échevinat. Il convient de compléter ce panorama des sources de l’histoire des familles du 19ème et du 20ème siècle, par - outre les annexes au mariage déjà mentionnées - les listes de milice (souvent non microfilmées et inscrites dans les archives provinciales), les actes du conseil de famille enregistrés au tribunal de paix, les déclarations de succession, les anciens almanachs et les livres d’adresse (dans les bibliothèques), les faire-part et les mémentos, les rôles d’impôt comme ceux pour la taxe de patente (dans les archives communales contemporaines), etc.
Comment se préparer de la meilleure façon ?
Il est possible qu’une généalogie existante reprenne partiellement ou complètement celle de votre famille. Vous pouvez le vérifier en consultant Larousse de la Généalogie. À la découverte de vos racines. Certaines associations de généalogie offrent des listes actualisées des différentes généalogies déjà dressées. Elles procurent également des formulaires de travail et fournissent des avis sur des programmes informatiques spécialisés.
